Showering and Exercise After PMU: Follow the Treatment-Specific Plan

Advice about water and exercise after permanent makeup varies because brows, lips, eyeliner and restorative tattooing are not identical, and techniques, dressings, products and healing progress differ. Your provider's written, treatment-specific instructions should lead.

Do not substitute a universal online countdown. Ask before leaving how to cleanse, shower, exercise, use aftercare products and respond if the area becomes wet.

Clarify the plan before treatment

  • When and how should the area first be cleaned?
  • May it contact clean water, and should direct spray or prolonged soaking be avoided?
  • Which product, if any, should be applied, in what amount and by what method?
  • Which activities should pause, and what sign determines readiness to resume?
  • Who should you contact after hours if symptoms concern you?

Shower without improvising

If showering is permitted, keep it brief and avoid forceful spray, rubbing, prolonged steam and unapproved cleansers on the treated area. Pat or air-dry exactly as directed. If a dressing is present, follow its specific water and removal instructions.

Accidental contact with water does not prove the result is ruined. Follow the provider's instructions, avoid rubbing or adding extra product, and contact them if the exposure was prolonged or symptoms change.

Exercise and sweat require context

Exercise adds heat, friction, sweat and possible environmental exposure. The appropriate pause depends on the site, procedure, healing state and activity. Ask about low-intensity movement, helmets, goggles, pools, hot yoga, saunas and contact sports separately rather than assuming one rule covers all.

Swimming, steam and cosmetic services

Immersion, shared water, high heat, exfoliation and active skincare may require a longer pause than an ordinary shower. Resume only under the written plan and after the provider confirms the area is ready where needed. Protect healed cosmetic tattooing from sun according to professional guidance.

Warning signs need medical assessment

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, spreading redness or heat, significant swelling, pus, fever, red streaking, eye symptoms, breathing difficulty or other concerning changes. A cosmetic practitioner or article cannot diagnose infection or allergy.

Bottom line: keep aftercare specific, written and responsive to healing—not tied to a generic internet timetable.
