What “organic” and “inorganic” mean in pigment chemistry

In pigment science, organic generally describes carbon-based colorants. It does not mean plant-derived, chemical-free, certified organic, or automatically safer. Inorganic commonly refers to mineral or metal-oxide colorants. Both groups can be manufactured, processed, blended, dispersed, and sold in very different formulations.

That distinction is useful for understanding color, but it is not a shortcut for judging a finished PMU product. The complete formula, contaminants, sterility controls, batch traceability, packaging, storage, and compliance documentation matter alongside the named colorants.

Why a healed color can change

A healed PMU result is shaped by more than the pigment category. The starting mixture, undertone, opacity, technique, skin characteristics, healing, aftercare, light exposure, time, and later skin treatments can all affect what remains visible. Components in a blend may not change at the same rate, so the balance the eye perceives can shift.

This is why “it will fade true” is too strong a promise. Artists should document the exact product, shade, lot or batch number, date, area, and relevant client history. Healed photographs taken in consistent lighting are more useful than relying on memory or a fresh result.

How to read a pigment label without overclaiming

Start with the manufacturer’s ingredient declaration and Colour Index (CI) identifiers where provided. A CI number can help identify a colorant more precisely than a marketing shade name, but it does not describe the entire formula or certify that the product is appropriate in every jurisdiction.

  • Record the product name, shade, lot or batch number, and expiry or use-by information.
  • Check packaging integrity and the manufacturer’s storage instructions.
  • Request current safety, sterility, and regional compliance documentation from the supplier.
  • Verify the permitted use against the rules that apply where the service is performed.
  • Do not translate “vegan,” “natural,” “organic,” or “clean” into a medical safety claim.

United States and European Union: two different checks

In the United States, the FDA states that no color additives are approved for injection into the skin, including for tattoos and permanent makeup. A claim that an implanted PMU colorant is “FDA approved” should therefore be treated with caution. The practice of tattooing is also commonly governed by state or local requirements.

In the European Union, tattoo inks and permanent make-up are covered by restrictions under REACH. Formulas and supplier documents can change, so artists should check current documentation rather than relying on an old blog table or a product’s availability in another country.

A practical selection framework

Choose from products supported for the intended use and jurisdiction, then evaluate the artist-facing information: ingredient and CI disclosure, traceability, storage, handling, consistency, healed portfolio, and supplier support. Avoid selecting a formula solely because one pigment family is described as brighter, more natural, or longer lasting.

Color theory still matters. Undertone, target result, existing work, skin condition, and the limitations of the procedure should be discussed before treatment. When correction is involved, the safest decision may be to postpone, refer, or seek removal advice rather than layer more color.
